Thousands of cheerleaders may have been exposed to mumps
State health officials are warning athletes from 39 states and nine counties that they may have been exposed to mumps at a cheerleading competition last month in Dallas.
A person from another state who had mumps traveled to Dallas for the National Cheerleaders Association All-Star National Championship, Texas Department of State Health Services spokesman Chris Van Deusen said.
The department sent a letter to those who participated in the competition, which was Feb. 23-25 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, to let them know that they or their children may have been exposed to the virus.
No Texas residents have developed mumps in connection with the case, but the department is urging people to watch for symptoms, Van Deusen said.
